Reporting a bug usefully
Browser tools fail in ways that depend heavily on the exact combination of browser, operating system and hardware, so a report that says "the mic test does not work" is very difficult to act on. Five details make it straightforward:
- The page address where it happened
- Your browser and its version — the About page in the browser menu shows it
- Your operating system and version
- What you expected to happen
- What happened instead, including any message shown on the page
If the browser console shows an error, copying that text helps enormously. Press F12, open the Console tab, reproduce the problem, and copy anything in red.
Corrections
Our troubleshooting guides name specific menus and settings, and operating systems move those around. If a step does not match your screen, tell us which guide, which step, and what you actually see. Include your OS version. Corrections are the most valuable messages we receive and they go to the front of the queue.
Suggesting a tool
The most useful suggestion describes the problem rather than the solution. "I could not tell whether my headset mic or my laptop mic was being used" is more actionable than "add a device list", because it may have a simpler answer than the one you had in mind.
Tools we are most likely to build are ones that run entirely in the browser, need no account, and answer a question people currently have to guess at.
What we cannot help with
We cannot diagnose individual hardware over email, recommend a specific product to buy, or assist with anything involving a manufacturer's warranty. We also do not publish sponsored posts, accept paid links, or exchange links with other sites.
Privacy questions
If you want to know exactly what a page does with your microphone or camera, the short answer is: nothing leaves your device. The longer answer is in our privacy policy, and you can verify it yourself with your browser's network tab open while a test is running.
Contact FAQ
How do I report a problem with a tool?
Send the page address, your browser and version, your operating system, what you expected and what happened instead. Those five details resolve most reports without any back and forth.
Do you reply to every message?
We read everything and reply to most. Bug reports and factual corrections get answered first.
Can you help fix my specific microphone?
We cannot troubleshoot individual setups by email, but if your problem is not covered by an existing guide that is useful to know — several guides exist because enough people asked the same question.
Do you accept guest posts or link exchanges?
No. We do not publish sponsored content and we do not trade links.
