How these guides differ from the fix pages

The fix guides answer "my microphone stopped working, what do I click?" They are step-by-step, platform-specific and deliberately short.

These guides answer the questions behind that: why gain and volume are not the same thing, why noise suppression makes some voices worse, why a cheaper microphone can outperform an expensive one in an untreated room. They are for when the microphone works and you want it to be better.

How we test things

Every measurement described in these guides can be reproduced with the tools on this site. The dBFS figures come from the same Web Audio analyser that powers the microphone test, and the settings referenced are the ones your browser actually exposes through the standard media APIs — which is why you can toggle echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain control and hear the result immediately.

We do not publish equipment rankings or affiliate lists. Where a specific microphone is mentioned it is as an example of a category, not a recommendation to buy that model.

Where to start, depending on what is bothering you

Five guides is not many, but they answer quite different questions, and the fastest route in depends on what prompted you to look.

If people say you sound quiet or distant, read the settings guide first. The gain section explains why turning up the volume in Windows does not do what turning up gain does, and the target levels there fix the problem for most people in a couple of minutes.

If people can hear your room — a fan, traffic, keyboard, an echo that makes you sound like you are in a stairwell — the noise guide is the one. It works outward from the cheapest fixes, which are moving closer and putting something soft behind you, before it gets anywhere near software.

If you are about to spend money, read the USB versus XLR comparison and the equipment guide together. Between them they will probably talk you out of the purchase you were planning and into a boom arm, which is the outcome that makes most people happier.

If something important is coming up — an interview, a recording, a presentation — the testing checklist is a five-minute routine that catches the failures that actually happen on the day.

What these guides assume about you

They assume you are using a normal computer in a normal room, not a treated studio, and that your budget is finite. That shapes the advice considerably: recommendations that only work in a quiet, acoustically treated space are noted as such rather than presented as universal.

They also assume you would rather understand a setting than be told a number. Where there is a recommended value it is given, but the reasoning comes with it, because the right answer for a podcast and the right answer for a video call are frequently different — and knowing why lets you decide for a situation neither of us anticipated.

No prior audio knowledge is needed. Terms like dBFS, noise floor, polar pattern and gain staging are explained where they first appear, and nothing here requires software you do not already have.

Kept current

Operating systems move settings, browsers change permission flows, and applications rename their audio options. When that happens the affected guide is updated rather than left to rot, and corrections from readers are the fastest way we hear about it — the contact page explains what to include.
