Double Click Test — Is Your Mouse Failing?
Find out whether your mouse registers one press as two. This test measures the gap between every click in milliseconds and flags anything a human hand could not have produced.
How to read your results
Click the panel about ten times at the pace you would normally use — not fast, not deliberately slow. Each click is logged with the gap since the previous one.
Gaps of 150 milliseconds and above are ordinary. Gaps between 70 and 150 ms mean you were clicking quickly, which is fine. Gaps under 70 ms are the interesting ones: the fastest deliberate double-tap a person can produce sits around 80–100 ms, so anything meaningfully below that was not produced by your finger. It was produced by the switch.
One isolated short gap can happen by accident if your finger slipped. A pattern of them — several in ten clicks — is diagnostic. The verdict box appears once you have made at least eight clicks so the result is based on a reasonable sample.
What is physically happening inside the switch
A mouse button is a small mechanical switch with two metal contacts. Pressing the button drives them together, and like any springy metal parts meeting at speed they bounce apart and back several times over a few milliseconds before settling.
Every mouse controller therefore applies a debounce filter: after the first contact it ignores any further changes for a fixed window, typically 8 to 20 milliseconds. New switches settle well inside that window, so you never notice.
As a switch ages, the contact surfaces oxidise and the spring weakens. The bouncing lasts longer. Eventually it outlasts the debounce window, the controller sees the second bounce as a genuine new press, and your single click becomes two. This is why the fault appears gradually, gets worse over time, and never goes away on its own.

If the mouse is still under warranty, this fault is normally covered. Run this test, note the millisecond gaps, and include them in your support ticket — a measured result is far more persuasive than "it double-clicks sometimes".
Ruling out the alternatives first
Before concluding the switch has failed, eliminate two impostors. A wireless mouse with a weak battery or a crowded 2.4 GHz band can duplicate or drop input, so test with fresh batteries or a cable. And a very sensitive touchpad on a laptop can register a stray palm touch as a second click, which looks identical in a log — disable the touchpad and repeat the test if you are on a laptop.
If neither changes anything and the short gaps persist, the switch is the answer. You can confirm the general health of the rest of the mouse with the mouse button and wheel test.

What is mouse double-click chatter?
It is when a single physical press registers as two clicks. The metal contacts inside the switch bounce as they close, and once the switch wears the bounce lasts longer than the debounce filter allows for, so the computer sees two separate presses.
What gap counts as a fault?
Anything under about 70 milliseconds. A human hand cannot deliberately produce two separate clicks that close together, so a gap that short during ordinary clicking is the switch firing twice on its own.
Can software fix a double-clicking mouse?
Only partly. Some manufacturers' software lets you raise the debounce time, which masks the symptom at the cost of a slightly less responsive click. It does not repair the switch, and the fault usually continues to worsen.
Can I repair it myself?
Sometimes. Contact cleaner sprayed into the switch occasionally restores it for a while. The reliable repair is replacing the switch, which requires soldering. On mice with hot-swappable optical switches, replacement takes seconds.
Does it happen to expensive mice too?
Yes. It is a property of mechanical switches rather than of price, and some well-regarded gaming mice became notorious for it. Mice with optical switches avoid the problem entirely because nothing physically bounces.
Could it be a Windows setting instead?
The Windows double-click speed setting changes how quickly two clicks are treated as a double click, but it cannot create clicks that were not sent. If this test shows gaps under 70 ms, the clicks are real and the hardware is at fault.
