Microphone Echo and Feedback — How to Stop It
Echo has one cause and one reliable cure. Understand the loop and you can fix it in seconds, on any device and in any app.

Echo on a call is not a mysterious audio fault. It is a loop: sound comes out of somebody's speakers, gets picked up by their microphone, and is sent back to the person who originally spoke, who then hears themselves a fraction of a second later.
That means the person who hears the echo is almost never the person causing it. If you hear yourself echoing, someone else's microphone is picking up their speakers. If others complain about echo and you cannot hear it, the loop is at your end. This single insight resolves most echo arguments on group calls.
Fixes, in the order to try them
Put on headphones
This breaks the loop completely and instantly. With headphones, no sound from the call reaches your microphone, so nothing can be sent back. It is not a workaround — it is the reason professional broadcasters always wear headphones. If everyone on a call wears headphones, echo is impossible.
Find who is causing it
Ask each person to mute in turn. The moment the echo stops, you have found the source. On a large call, the host can mute everyone and unmute one at a time. It is almost always someone using laptop speakers with the volume high.
Turn the speaker volume down
If headphones are not an option, lower the speaker volume until the microphone stops picking it up. Echo cancellation works within a certain range and gives up above it. Moving the speakers away from the microphone, or turning them so they do not face it, helps for the same reason.
Make sure echo cancellation is on
In your call app's audio settings, confirm echo cancellation is enabled — in Zoom it is under Audio, in Discord under Voice & Video. On this site you can toggle it on the microphone test above and hear the difference. It should be on whenever you use speakers, and it is not needed with headphones.
Check for two devices in the same room
If two people join the same meeting from the same room, each one's speakers feed the other's microphone and you get howling feedback almost immediately. Only one device in a room should have both microphone and speakers active; everyone else should join muted with audio off, or use headphones.
Do not join the same meeting twice
Joining from a laptop and a phone at once creates a loop between your own two devices. This is a very common cause of sudden feedback partway through a call, especially when someone joins on a phone to share their screen.
Move the microphone away from hard surfaces
Room echo is different from feedback: your voice bounces off bare walls, glass and desks and arrives at the microphone twice. It makes you sound distant and hollow rather than producing a howl. Soft furnishings, curtains, a rug, or even speaking closer to the microphone all reduce it.
Test yourself with a recording
Use the record button on the microphone test above, speak for five seconds, and listen back with headphones. Room echo is obvious in a recording and very hard to hear live, because your brain filters it out while you are talking.
Feedback and room echo are different problems
Feedback is a loop between a speaker and a microphone. It builds quickly into a howl or squeal, gets worse as volume rises, and stops the instant the loop is broken. Headphones cure it completely.
Room echo, or reverberation, is your own voice reflecting off hard surfaces and reaching the microphone a few milliseconds after the direct sound. It never howls; it just makes you sound like you are speaking in a bathroom. Headphones do not help at all, because the microphone is picking up the room rather than the speakers. The cures are distance, soft materials, and speaking closer to the microphone.
How echo cancellation actually works
Acoustic echo cancellation is genuinely clever. The software knows exactly what it just sent to your speakers, so when that same signal reappears at the microphone a few milliseconds later it can subtract it mathematically before transmitting.
It has limits. It needs a fairly stable acoustic path, so moving a laptop mid-call temporarily breaks it. It struggles when the speaker volume is high enough to distort, because the returning signal no longer matches what was sent. And it can slightly dull your voice, which is why recording engineers turn it off and wear headphones instead.
Why you should not simply mute yourself
Muting stops your echo reaching others, but it also stops your voice, and it hides the underlying problem so it recurs on the next call. It also leads to the familiar pattern of someone talking for twenty seconds while muted.
Fix the loop instead. Headphones cost nothing to put on, break the loop permanently, and improve your own experience of the call as well — you hear the other person more clearly, and you stop unconsciously raising your voice to compete with your own speakers.

Why do I hear an echo of my own voice on calls?
Someone else's microphone is picking up their speakers and sending your voice back. The person hearing the echo is rarely the one causing it — ask participants to mute in turn to find the source.
