Microphone Too Quiet — How to Make It Louder

A quiet microphone is annoying for everyone on the call, and the usual reaction — turning every slider to maximum — makes things worse. Amplifying a weak signal amplifies the room noise and the hiss with it, so you end up loud and unpleasant instead of quiet and clear.
The right approach is to work through the signal chain in order, starting with the physical relationship between you and the microphone, then the device's own gain, then the operating system, and only then software boost. Watch the meter at the top of this page as you go: you are aiming for peaks around −12 to −6 dB when you speak normally.
Fixes, in the order to try them
Fix the distance first
Sound pressure falls off fast with distance. Doubling the gap between your mouth and the microphone roughly quarters the energy that reaches it. Most people sit far too far away — 15 to 30 cm is right for a desktop microphone, and a headset boom should sit at the corner of your mouth rather than in front of it. This one change is often worth more than every setting below combined.
Point the microphone at yourself
Side-address condenser microphones — the large upright kind — pick up from the front face, not from the top. Speaking into the top of a Blue Yeti or similar gives a thin, quiet result. Look for the brand badge and speak into that side. For a headset boom, the small opening should face your mouth.
Turn up the gain on the microphone itself
If your microphone or audio interface has a physical gain knob, that is the first control that matters and the one with the best signal-to-noise ratio. Raise it until peaks reach about −12 dB on the meter above, then stop. Software cannot recover quality that was never captured, so getting this right matters more than any later step.
Raise the input volume in your operating system
On Windows, open Settings, System, Sound, click your input device and set Input volume to 100. On macOS, open System Settings, Sound, Input and drag the Input volume slider up while speaking. Re-check the meter after each change.
Enable microphone boost on Windows
Search for “Change system sounds”, open the Recording tab, double-click your microphone, then the Levels tab. If a Microphone Boost slider is present, raise it in steps of +10 dB. Stop as soon as the meter reaches a healthy level — boost amplifies noise as well as voice, and +30 dB on a laptop microphone usually sounds worse than +10.
Turn off automatic gain control and test
Use the toggle on the microphone test above to disable automatic gain control, then speak. Some drivers implement it badly and hold the level down. If your voice is noticeably louder with it off, set the level manually instead and leave it off.
Check the jack you are using
On desktops, plug into the pink microphone jack, not the blue line-in. Line inputs expect a much stronger signal and produce a very quiet result from a microphone. On laptops with a single combo jack, a three-pole microphone plug carries no microphone signal at all — you need a four-pole headset plug or a USB adapter.
Add a preamp or switch to USB
Dynamic microphones such as the Shure SM58 produce a much weaker signal than condensers and often need more gain than a computer's built-in input can supply. An audio interface or an inline preamp solves this properly. If you are using a 3.5 mm microphone on a noisy motherboard input, a USB microphone will usually be both louder and cleaner.
Gain and volume are not the same thing
This distinction explains most bad-sounding fixes. Gain is applied at the input, before the signal is converted to digital, and it determines how much real detail is captured. Volume is applied afterwards and simply scales what was already recorded.
Raise the gain and you capture more signal relative to the noise floor. Raise the volume on a signal that was captured too quietly and you scale the noise up with it. That is why a recording boosted in software sounds hissy while the same voice recorded with proper gain sounds clean at the same loudness. Always fix the earliest control in the chain that you can.
Why the room matters as much as the microphone
A quiet voice in a noisy room is the hardest case to fix, because everything you do to raise the voice also raises the noise. Before buying anything, spend five minutes on the room: turn off fans and air conditioning, close windows, move away from a desktop computer's exhaust, and put something soft between the microphone and any hard reflective surface.
Distance interacts with this. Moving closer raises your voice without raising the room noise at all, because the room is equally distant either way. That is why every broadcaster works close to the microphone — it improves the ratio of voice to room in a way no setting can.
When the level is fine but you still sound quiet
Occasionally the meter shows a healthy level and listeners still say you are hard to hear. That is usually not loudness but clarity. A muffled voice — from speaking across the microphone rather than into it, from a pop filter pressed against the capsule, or from heavy noise suppression — reads at a normal level while being harder to understand.
Record five seconds with the button on the test above and listen with headphones. If your voice sounds distant or dull rather than simply quiet, adjust the angle and distance rather than the gain, and try turning noise suppression off.
